ACT NOW- EVEN THOUGH IT MAY ALREADY BE TOO LATE!

~Environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented~ Barry Commoner

True words indeed. The air is becoming increasingly heavy, smoggy and unclean. Pulmonary diseases are on the rise and the festival of lights has not even begun yet- I shudder to think what it will be on Diwali and the days that follow. Are we so caught up in tradition and fun that we cannot see what harm we are doing to ourselves, and to a million other inhabitants, not to mention the countless birds and animals?

Many talk of it, complain, blame, but few are the ones who are truly willing to do something to make a change. Almost everyone wants the change- some don't know how, others are willing to lecture others but will not walk the talk. The comfort of personal cars, the reluctance to walk even a few meters, the hassle of using public transport, the convenience of simply dumping garbage and all kinds of "pooja samagri" in the rivers justifying it with religious and traditional norms are all surely and steadily adding to the pollution- at an alarmingly fast rate too.

Is it really worth the price? Wake up and take a serious look around you...drop the general attitude of " what difference will it make if I don't, others will anyway, so I may as well too!!" It is every drop that counts and each and every person needs to take a pledge to avoid anything that adds to the already excessive levels of pollution in the city. The educated lot has a bigger responsibility- create awareness, make the effort, lead by example and know that every effort will create change.

Plan your days, communicate with friends, and whenever possible, use the car pool system.
Walk, when the distance is short.
Take public transport when you can
Say NO to crackers- not even ONE!
Discard old vehicles, stoves, air conditioners, machines that emit poisonous gases
STOP throwing garbage in rivers- find an ecological way of doing the poojas- GOD will appreciate that much more.
Talk to friends, spread awareness and lead by example.
Teach your kids to respect nature.
Use natural air-purifiers: Plant more trees and nurture them till they grow into fully grown ones

The list is endless and there are many things that we can all do. Everything big starts with a small step- take that step and start with it today!

Remember, the Earth will survive without humans, but humans won't survive without the Earth...and it's not the planet that needs saving, it's the species inhabiting it currently that needs to be saved-HUMANS!!
